What We Do

Poverty Eradication

Poverty is a multi-dimensional phenomenon, defined and measured in a multitude of ways. In many cases, poverty has been defined and measured in economic welfare terms such as income or consumption. An individual is poor if he/she falls below a predetermined level of economic welfare deemed to constitute a reasonable minimum in some absolute level or by the standards of a specific society. Poverty is not a static concept. People often move in and out of poverty from year to year.

Poverty status is strongly associated with the level of education, household size and engagement in agricultural activity.Since Independence, Kenya remains a dual economy with wide disparities in economic, social and infra-structural development across regions.

“Poverty in Northern Kenya means lack of waterand thereof food. In addition to this lack of basic needs, the areas also have a limited number of schools characterized by illiteracy. Health care services are often inaccessible with emergency and specialized care almost completely non-existent”

Integrated Community Livelihoods

Nasri Livelihoods Foundation work with community groups and organisations by enhancing their capacity to design and implement integrated livelihood initiatives. Building capacities of community groups and institutions to not only exploit local resources at their disposal, access external assistance, but add superior value to their products to increase their wealth.

In particular support measures in food security, microfinance, nutrition, market access etc as well as advocacy on key livelihood issues.

Good Governance and Capacity Building

Nasri Livelihoods Foundation is promoting good governance through involvement of all in the decision making process and to take initiatives to reduce poverty through helping communities gaining access to education, primary health care, water and sanitation; and promoting social institutions and the social capital of vulnerable groups. Good Governance is one of the pillars of poverty reduction strategy of Nasri Livelihoods Foundation.

Good governance facilitates pro-poor sector reforms and state and local government policies, as well as sound macroeconomic management. It ensures the transparent use of public funds, strengthens anti-corruption, encourages growth of the private sector and corporate governance, promotes effective delivery of public services, and helps to establish the rule of law.
